Plastic Fashion: Participants' Work Showcase

The exhibition displayed participants’ artworks made during Plastic Fashion Workshops conducted by Manuela Catania for HKUST staff members and students. Manuela Catania is an Italian designer and artist. She has been exploring ways to use old textile and plastic to hand-make wearable fashion pieces.

To prepare for the workshop, we worked with the Sustainable Unit to collect used, clean plastic on campus. In the workshop sessions, participants learnt how to turn waste into useful materials, fashion design and making skills.

Students may attain 6-hour credit for the HLTH1010 Healthy Lifestyle Course after attending all lessons.

About the Instructor

Manuela Catania is an Italian designer graduated in architecture with 110 cum laude at the University of Architecture in Palermo. She also attended a Master Degree in Accessories and Jewellery Design at the Domus Academy in Milan and a Master of Arts at University of Wales. She explored the design world and she specialised in Fashion Design at IED Moda Lab in Milan and in Fashion System at European Design Institute in Venice. She also collaborated with architects and designers in Milan. In the meanwhile, she has developed her first collection of jewels made by Murano glass and showing it during the Milan Design Week. She created her personal jewellery collection in Venice. In 2012 she lived in Brazil, São Paulo, where she has explored the design of this fascinating country. She had a lecturer experience at IED in São Paulo about design in Italy “A experiencia IED Milão/Veneza/São Paulo”. Her most relevant working experience as lecturer has been at ESMOD University in Kuala Lumpur, where she taught fashion design.
