LexisNexis Academic and WiseNews are two primary databases giving
full-text access to thousands of newspaper sources around the world.

These two databases complement each other in terms of geographic coverage.
LexisNexis Academic contains over 6,000 English language sources,
including US and international newspapers, magazines, news wires, and
broadcast transcripts. WiseNews specializes in Chinese language newspapers
published in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and Macau.

This workshop will demonstrate effective searching of the databases with
hands-on exercises.

workshops for Reuters 3000 Xtra, a premium database for integrated
financial information.

It covers:
– Stocks, warrants, options, futures and indices traded in worldwide
exchanges
– Fixed income securities including Treasury and corporate bonds
– Cross rates and a vast range of economic indicators
– Company profiles with financial statements of the past 10 to 15 years
– 2 years of international business and financial news

The workshop will show you how to:
– Find and retrieve current & historical data on stocks, indices, exchange
rates, etc.
– Search for companies that meet certain criteria (e.g., PE ratio,
dividend yield)

Datastream with Worldscope Add-On

*Description:*
An extensive financial database which provides information
on millions of financial instruments including equities and
fixed-income securities for more than 175 countries and 60
markets worldwide.

It covers Worldscope’s historical annual and interim/quarterly
data, standardized financial statement content, share data and
ratios, and stock performance information. Data on bonds,
unit and investment trusts, interest and exchange rates,
equity and bond indices, economic indicators, options and
futures as well as commodities are also available.

The subscription includes two delivery platforms (DS Advance
and DS Windows) and Advance for Office (AFO) which allows
users to build complex models, charts, and reports in
Microsoft Office.

*Ebrary*
Contains 4,400 e-books from leading publishers in a wide
variety of subject areas and disciplines. Users have to install
a plug-in program once in order to view the contents.

*Oxford Scholarship Online*
Includes over 1,800 e-books published by the Oxford University
Press in multiple disciplines with an emphasis on the
humanities and social sciences.

*Oxford Digital Reference Shelf*
Provides access to 26 reference titles published by the
Oxford University Press. Most of them are dictionaries and
encyclopedias in the humanities and social science subjects.

Web of Science Databases

Web of Science (1991-) provides access to Science Citation Index Expanded
(SCI Expanded) and Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI). These two
databases together cover over 8,000 top international journals in science,
engineering, business and social sciences. Users can also navigate to
electronic full-text journal articles subscribed by the HKUST Library.
They, therefore, are important tools for scholarly research in all these
fields.

This workshop will show you how to:
– Perform general searches by author, title, topic, etc.
– Obtain full-text of the retrieved articles.
– Find articles that have cited a particular author or work.
– Trace the number of times that an article has been cited
– Discover key papers on a particular topic.
– Locate related articles that share one or more cited references.
– Receive emails on new articles which cite your chosen articles as
references.
– Analyze search results by author, institution, journal, etc.
