Dear Students,
Welcome back to HKUST for Spring Term! We hope you had a good winter break. We were very busy over this period, finishing off the Library Learning Space Enhancement Project and expanding services.
What’s changed?
As part of the Library’s ongoing renovations, the various wiring conduits in the three Media and Discussion Rooms on LG1 need to be relocated. Unfortunately, this involves some very noisy work, as the contractor cuts the concrete walls for the new conduits.
This work is now scheduled for this weekend (Saturday and Sunday, 8-9 November). We apologise for the noise – please be understanding as we work to improve the media rooms.
We need your comments on some furniture samples for the 1/F and LG1 renovations!
Please visit the furniture samples area on LG1 behind the Media Counter, and write your comments on the posted sheets of paper.
So far, we have several low and high chairs for you to evaluate. More furniture samples will be coming in a week or so, including a table or two.
All of 1/F, and part of LG1 will undergo some renovation during the next couple months.
We will work with the contractors to reduce the disturbance, especially as the exam period approaches.
Please be understanding as we work to improve the Library’s study environments.
Since there is a typhoon approaching, the Learning Commons will close with the Library today. See the Observatory for more typhoon news: http://www.hko.gov.hk/wxinfo/currwx/tc_gis_e.htm
The Hong Kong Observatory issued a typhoon Signal No. 1 last night. IF there is a Signal No. 3 later today, the Learning Commons will CLOSE tonight, at the same time with the Library at 11pm.
In the whole term, the Learning Commons opens 24 hours per day. The LG1 door will not be closed until the end of term, December 19 11pm.
Remember to bring your ITSC card to enter the LC during the Card Access Period.
In this last week of summer break, the LC opens until 11pm. Starting from the first week of the term, we will open 24 hours a day. Find out about the opening hours here:

As part of a set of Learning Spaces Enhancements, several collections are moving back to the ground floor from LG1.
The Newspapers and Current Periodicals are moving during th next ten days.
This will bring them together with the Popular Books collection in a pleasant environment overlooking the Library Garden. The back issues of the Newspapers will be available in the Garden Lobby, along with some sofas for reading.
Starting May 30, the Learning Commons will follow Library hours.

We are inviting you to participate in two casual and creative activities: Study Space Design Workshop, and Website Design Workshop. In these 1.5 hours workshops, you will engage in different kinds of activities that help us prepare for two important projects: refurbishing some study space on 1/F and LG1, and revamping the Library website. This is a unique opportunity for you to collaborate with us to shape your future library space, in both physical and virtual world. As a token of thanks, we will issue $75 cash reward for your participation. |
You can print from your mobile devices to Library printers. Follow the simple instruction here to download the App and set up:

The Library is planning to refurbish part of 1/F study space and LG1 area at Media Resources. We will take reference from the popular use of the Learning Commons, to make Library learning space more friendly and supportive to students’ needs. We are now at the stage of getting a designing firm. If you have any suggestions, please contact us at library@ust.hk.
