Job Vacancies – Student Helpers

The Library is looking for students to fill vacancies in different Library units:

1. Student Helper (Administration)


Part-time and Full-time appointment from June – August 2019

Duties

  • Input data and compile statistics
  • Assist in the logistics and running of library events
  • General office duties including scanning, filing, photo-taking, etc.
  • Translation and editing work
  • Poster/Web page design and maintenance
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Good command of Chinese and English
  • Proficient in MS Office including Excel and Word
  • Meticulous and detail oriented
  • Reliable and trustworthy
  • Able to work independently with little supervision
  • Interest in design and have knowledge in web authoring tools such as WordPress is an advantage

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the hiring period, the appointees should be able to:

  • acquire generic workplace skills in a university library administration office setting particularly on events management
  • develop organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • learn effective ways of solving problems

Salary

HK$61 per hour (up to 17 hours/week) for part-time appointment
HK$10,230 per month for full-time appointment

2. Systems Project Assistant


Full-time appointment from June – August 2019

Duties

The appointees will be required to assist the Systems Department in the development of web-based library applications and programs, including web interfaces, application enhancements, mobile-device and software customization.

Requirements

Applicants should have experience in developing web-based application, preferably using PHP, MySQL, Apache and Javascript; and knowledge in graphic manipulation and design, data conversion, and mobile app/website development. A creative mind and being user-oriented are essential qualities.

  • Able to build team work skills

Salary

HK$10,230 per month (new rates with effect from May 1, 2019)

3. Resource Management Department (Serials Team) Student Helper


Full-time appointment from May 30 – August 31, 2019

Duties

  • Provide support in research assessment project including, verify & edit metadata in research outputs, upload abstract/table of contents of research outputs and handle other clerical tasks that may arise from project;
  • Perform acquisitions duties for the team including, handle incoming materials; scan and file invoices; assist to handle binding/withdrawn materials;
  • Perform cataloging duties for the team including, perform searching, verifying & modifying metadata in library systems;
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Good command of Chinese and English
  • Proficient in MS Office including Excel, Word and Chinese word processing; knowledge of Adobe Acrobat DC preferred
  • Experience in searching library databases; good data analytical skills preferred
  • Meticulous and detail oriented
  • Reliable and trustworthy
  • Able to work independently

Salary

HK$10,230 per month (new rates with effect from May 1, 2019)

4. Resource Management Department (Monograph Team) Student Helper


Part-time appointment from June – August 2019 (renewable)

Duties

  • Assist in creating or modifying of records
  • Search metadata in catalogs/databases/Internet; checking access of library e-resources and records
  • Unpacking/checking incoming materials, scanning invoices
  • End-processing library materials, e.g. stamp and label
  • Index articles for News Clippings database
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Good command of Chinese and English
  • Responsible, well organized, attention to details and ability to work accurately
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word
  • Knowledge in Hanyu pinyin & Chinese inputting

Salary

HK$61 per hour (12-17 hours per week) (new rates with effect from May 1, 2019)

5. Circulation Student Helper


Part-time appointment (Fall Term)

Duties

  • Provide service at Circulation Counter. Duties include checking out and checking in library materials, answering general enquiries, helping users to search books and tidying up at library closing
  • Perform stacks duties, including shelving books and periodicals, shelf-reading, handling newspapers and patrolling
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Good communication, interpersonal skills and team spirit
  • Strong sense of responsibility
  • Work regular hours weekly

Fall Term (mid-August – December 31, 2019)

  • Maximum 10 hours per week
  • Working schedule in August negotiable

Salary

HK$61 per hour (new rates with effect from May 1, 2019)
