HKUST Library Collections

Professor of McGill University and the University of British Columbia, Paul Ta-Kuang Lin (林達光) (1920-2004) was a prominent scholar in the 20th century who had devoted himself to the greater understanding of China in the West. He spent 15 years in China from 1949 to 1964, witnessing first-hand the campaigns and struggles that culminated in the Cultural Revolution. On his return to Canada, he remained an academic and contributed greatly to the normalization of relations between China and the West.

In 2007, Mrs. Eileen Lin donated her late husband's personal collection to the Library. Some 5,500 items were received comprising books, documents, and pamphlets. The next batch of donation will include manuscripts, correspondence, speeches and photos which can illuminate the exceptional life of Professor Lin and the tremendous changes that swept through modern China.

The Library has processed and added close to 2,500 titles to our book collection, the majority of which were published during the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976. Here is a sample of titles that captures the richness of this collection.
