One can search Chinese books in these categories: 古籍, 民國圖書, 民國期刊, 現代圖書, 學位論文. Some resources are available in full text, but registration is required for viewing. There is also a good collection of calligraphy resources, searchable by character. Offered by Zhejiang University Library.

BASE: Bielefeld Academic Search Engine
A multi-disciplinary search engine for academically relevant web resources created by Bielefeld University Library in Germany. It indexes over 21 million academic documents from worldwide sources. The Advanced Search allows users to limit results by document format such as videos and primary data. Its Eurovoc Thesaurus can search for terms and synonyms in 21 languages, which is useful for retrieving documents from repositories in different countries.

LibriVox: Acoustical Liberation of Books in the Public Domain
LibriVox's goal is to make all public domain books available as free audio books. There are several options for listening. The first step is to get the audio files (mp3 or ogg vorbis) into your own computer and then use a media player (itunes, winamp, windows media player) to play the files. Or you can download an entire book using the subscribe feature in iTunes.

Universal Digital Library: Million Book Project
Designed "to create a Universal Library which will foster creativity and free access to all human knowledge." and hosted at Carnegie Mellon University, the project offers full images of books in many different languages (Most are in Chinese or English) and subject areas. About 50 scanning centers worldwide, mostly in China and India, provide the content. Pages display in HTML or TIFF format, which requires a downloadable viewer 'djvu'.
