Polymer Encyclopedia

Description and Coverage

Provides a comprehensive treatise of topics in the area of polymer science. Contains the same information as the 19 volume printed version except that it does not contain graphics.

Subject Coverage

Natural and synthetic polymeric materials, their molecular, physical, mechanical, and biological properties, as well as test methods, processing and equipment.

Introduction

Each chapter in the hardcopy is represented by four types of records in the database.

Summary Record

One for each chapter. Gives an overview of the chapter and contains the following fields: Chapter Title, Chapter Abstract, Section Headings (titles of the sections in the chapter), Table Titles, Figure Titles, Descriptors (subject headings), and CAS Registry Numbers.

Text (Section) Record

One or more for each chapter. Each record contains the following fields: Chapter Title, Section Heading (title of the section), and Text of the Section.

Table Record

One or more for each chapter. Each record contains the following fields: Chapter Title, Table Title, Table Data, and CAS Registry Numbers.

Bibliographic Record

One for each chapter. Each record contains the following fields: Chapter Title, Patent Numbers, Patent Applications Numbers, and and Bibliography References.

To retrieve all records of a chapter, search by Chapter Title which is a field common to all four types of records.

Search

Highlight "Easy Menu Search" and press <Enter>.

Highlight "Begin a New Search" and press <Enter>. "Search Options" will be displayed, they can be divided into two groups:

I. Selecting Terms from an Index

Word/Phrase Index
Subject Headings 
Chapter Title 
Section Heading
CAS Registry Number
Patent Application Number*
Patent Number*
Citation Number*
Chapter Number*
Section Number*
Table Number*

II. Entering terms Directly 

Word & Phrases*
Bibliography Reference 
Table Data

Options marked with "*" are available by highlighting "Additional Search options" and press <Enter>. The options "Word/Phrase Index" and "Word & Phrase" search all the fields except those number fields.

Highlight the desired search option and press <Enter>.

To Search By Group I Options: Type the full or first part of a term, a list of indexed terms will be displayed. Highlight the desired term and press <Enter> to select (more than one term can be selected).  Then press <F10> to display the number of records found.

To Search By Group II Options: Type a search statement and press <Enter>.

Examples: Find Records:
biodegrad?  containing the words "biodegrade," "biodegradation," "biodegradability," etc.
nonwoven*fabric  containing both the word "nonwoven," and the word "fabric"
poly vinyl chloride containing the term "poly vinyl chloride"
spray coating, powder coating  containing either "spray coating," or "powder coating"

Modify Search

If the search retrieves too many or too few records, it can be modified by highlighting "Modify the current search with additional criteria"and press <Enter>.

Too Many Records - Highlight "Limit with additional concepts or terms" and press <Enter>, then select a search option to limit the search.

Too Few Records - Highlight "Include alternate terms" and press <Enter>, then select a search option to expand the search.

Display and Mark Records

Highlight "Display, Print or Transfer the Selected Record(s)"and <Enter>.

Highlight "Complete Record" and press <Enter>. Press <PgUp>/<PgDn> for Next/Previous Screen. Press <Ctrl-PgUp>/<Ctrl-PgDn>for Next/Previous Record.

To mark a record for later printing or downloading, press <F7>from the displayed record screen.

Print or Transfer Records

Press <F8>from the displayed record screen.

To Print, highlight the desired print option and press <Enter>.

To Transfer (Download), highlight the desired transfer option and press <Enter>. Type the filename e.g. a: plastics, and then press <Enter>.

Quit

Press <Esc>to return to the menu "Select Main Activity."

Highlight "Quit Easy Menu Mode"and press <Enter>.

Highlight "Return to DOS"and press <Enter>.
