Designing Online Tutorials with WebCT

The cost is 500 HKD.

Target audience

Librarians or information professionals who need to develop online tutorials for their students, in-house staff or clients.

Description of the Workshop

This workshop introduces strategies and techniques in designing a user-oriented online tutorial with WebCT. The instructors from the HKUST Library will share with the participants their experience in developing the Information Literacy Tutorial.

This tutorial provides a virtual learning environment for students to learn to use the Library effectively for individual research.

Participants will gain a working knowledge of WebCT through a number of hands-on exercises.

The workshop covers the following topics:

  • Why online tutorials? What are the benefits of virtual learning? The pros and cons of online classes and traditional face-to-face classes.
  • Why WebCT? What other possible courseware you may consider for designing a tutorial?
  • What project management techniques you can apply to the process?
  • How formative evaluation can help facilitate a high quality tutorial?
  • Hands-on exercise in developing 3 modules: taking a virtual library tour, using a library catalog, and learning information research skills. This includes developing the content, creating self-tests, quizzes, and an evaluation form for the tutorial.
  • How to conduct usability studies for the tutorial to uncover rooms for improvement?
  • What are the effective ways to promote the online tutorial?
  • How to monitor the students’ level of achievement? Various administrative functions will be covered including the creation and maintenance of the student database and generation of usage and quiz statistics.
