This will be done by converting the G/F Men’s Toilet to Women’s use from 20-29 May.

Ground Floor men's toilet notice

So there will be two Women’s Toilets on G/F during exams, as well as one on each of the other floors. Men’s toilets will continue to be available on the other floors.

Background:

To clarify the situation, the male toilet on the ground floor of the Library will be reallocated for female use during the exam period from 20-29 May. During this period, the other four male toilets in the Library will remain as they are.

As you may know, the Library is always extremely crowded during the exam periods. In past years, this has resulted in queues for the women’s toilets, especially the one on the ground floor. With the 3-3-4 cohort added, we expect the problem to be more severe.

In an effort to ease this situation, we are experimenting with temporarily changing one of the male toilets to female and evaluate the effect. If it helps, this arrangement may be repeated during future examination periods.

You may be interested in some additional information:

This will change the ratio of female to male toilet stalls in the Library from 50% (19) to 60% (23).

When urinals in the toilets are counted, the number of people who can simultaneously use Library toilets under this reallocation will be 23 females and 38 males.

The Hong Kong Government is now amending the Building (Standards of Sanitary Fitments,
Plumbing, Drainage Works and Latrines) Regulations, Cap 123I, to increase the ratio of female toilets in government and public facilities.

With a donation of $3 million from Dr Ko Pui-shuen, Chairman of Kingrich Asia Holdings Limited, the Library has initiated two projects to enhance access to and use of the University Archives & Special Collections.

Building a Special Collections Gallery

In addition to providing reading and research space for users, the Gallery will be dedicated to exhibitions of our Special Collections and University archival materials; such as antique maps of China, classical science and technology-related rare books, and HKUST historical documents. During the past few months, we have worked with the designer to come up with a design layout and are in the process of selecting a construction vendor. The target completion date is August 2013.

The Gallery will be named the “Hong Kong Chiu Chow Chamber of Commerce Ko Pui Shuen Gallery (香港潮州商會高佩璇展閱廳)” to honor the donor.

Digitizing Special Collections and University Archives Material

China Regnum Antique Map (1593)

To provide easier access to our Special Collections and University Archives, selective items will be digitized and a digital content management system will be developed. Since last September, we have identified items for digitization in high resolution images; which include antique maps, rare books, some Chinese thread-bound books, University publications and architectural plans.

Scanning work has started as well as the in-house design of the digital content management system. The project is planned to complete in 3 years.

We hope these two enhancement projects will bring our students and faculty closer to our Special Collections and University Archives and at the same time, raise the visibility and usage of these valuable and unique items.

About the Talk
Are you unhappy with the way you write ? If so, take your cue from advertising.
At the university level, good writing is not just a matter of knowing your
grammar. Most students suffer from the clutter disease, writing long, windy
sentences without focus or impact. Learn to unclutter your style by studying ads
and slogans.

Unlike boring sample sentences from grammar, these messages are clever and
memorable. They teach us the virtues of brevity and creativity and give us a
peek into the mind of the native English speaker. Businesses and political
parties pour big money into moving merchandise or winning over voters. Ads and
slogans are thus the most expensive and effective form of persuasive
communication. Every word counts.

See how the professionals promote their products or package politics with
economy, creativity and impact. Unlike students, these writers are most
target-conscious in their messages. There is no better cure to the clutter
disease.

About the Speaker
Mr. Philip Yeung is speechwriter to the President of HKUST and Senior Communication
Manager at Public Affairs Office. He was formerly a freelance speechwriter to many
Hong Kong leaders, including the current Financial Secretary and the Secretary for
Financial Services and the Treasury. Mr. Yeung completed his undergraduate and
graduate education at the University of Toronto and studied briefly at Exeter
College, Oxford University on a scholarship.

The lights are now under your control, instead of being managed from the central switch box.

Each of those tables now has a light switch – so if you need a bit of extra light during the day, you can turn the light on.

Please remember to turn the light off when you leave – saving energy is a task for all of us, working together.
