With a donation of $3 million from Dr Ko Pui-shuen, Chairman of Kingrich Asia Holdings Limited, the Library has initiated two projects to enhance access to and use of the University Archives & Special Collections.

Building a Special Collections Gallery

Overview of Gallery Design Space

In addition to providing reading and research space for users, the Gallery will be dedicated to exhibitions of our Special Collections and University archival materials; such as antique maps of China, classical science and technology-related rare books, and HKUST historical documents.  During the past few months, we have worked with the designer to come up with a design layout and are in the process of selecting a construction vendor.  The target completion date is August 2013.

The tables on LG4 at the bottom of the void – the ones with lights on them – have been modified.

The lights are now under your control, instead of being managed from the central switch box.

Each of those tables now has a light switch – so if you need a bit of extra light during the day, you can turn the light on.

Please remember to turn the light off when you leave – saving energy is a task for all of us, working together.

The Learning Commons Student Survey collected 886 replies, including online and paper submission.   The Library will look at your feedback carefully, and identify actions for making the space more friendly and supportive for everyone.

Thirty lucky students who won the $50 supermarket coupons have been notified by emails.  We thank you all for your participation.

If you have a good book to give away, you can leave it at the Book Exchange trolley.  It is parked next to the drinking fountain in LC Refreshment Zone.  Leave one, take one; it’s free, it’s green.

If you have borrowed whiteboard markers from the Information Commons or Learning Commons in the past couple of days, you may have noticed that they looked different from before.  These are refillable ones!  When a marker drys up, we can refill and reuse the marker a few more times.

Although the cost of the refillable ones is about the same as the traditional one, we hope that the switch can help us reduce waste.  We also urge all students to make good use of them.

Dear Colleagues and Students,

The Library now has equipment for video conferencing; it can be booked by staff members and PG students.

The equipment will enable high-definition video communications with off-campus collaborators during seminars, presentations, PhD defense, or other occasions.   You can also share computer slides and other content from a laptop with your collaborators.  And if your collaborators do not have similar equipment, they can connect to you with something as simple as an iPad.
