Dear Colleagues and Students,

You are warmly invited to visit the exhibition from the Library Special Collections titled From Canton Trade to Colonial Hong Kong: The Pearl River Delta before and after the Opium War”.

Date: 8 June – 30 November 2017
Venue: Hong Kong Chiu Chow Chamber of Commerce Ko Pui Shuen Gallery, 1/F, Lee Shau Kee Library

About the Exhibition (http://library.ust.hk/exhibitions/pearl-river-delta/)

The exhibition features around 30 maps, prints, photos and books from the Library Special Collections and 3 items on loan from the Roy Delbyck Collection.

From 1700 to 1870, the Pearl River Delta changed its trade orientation from Macao to Canton to Hong Kong. The exhibits on display reflect this change of settings, against the backdrop of an enormous change in the balance of economic and political power between China and Europe.

We hope this exhibition will help deepen our understanding of the history of our region and of China’s relationship with Europe beyond the simplified view of Chinese tradition versus European modernity.

Guided tours of the exhibition will be arranged in the fall semester. Stay tuned for our announcements.

We look forward to seeing you at the exhibition!

Best regards,

HKUST Library
